McGill Bathroom Renovation - 2021 Renomark Gold Award
The focus of this bathroom renovation was to provide a bathroom more suited to the clients, both in style and functionality. The dated bathroom with yellow-ish tones did not match the rest of the house’s bright and neutral style. The bathtub was not used for soaking and its thick decking caused a narrow cramped interior. The laminate countertop, while large in size and spanning fully between two walls, only utilized half of the space underneath with a vanity, with an equal amount of space open, unused and wasted.
Dark linoleum flooring was replaced with white marble tiles.
The tub and 6×6” salmon coloured tiles were removed to be replaced with a larger 60×32” shower. Removing the tub posed some challenges as when the home was built the original contractor cut the joists where the tub drain met, once discovered we properly braced the joists and created proper drainage. We installed a low-threshold solid white acrylic Fleurco shower base with a concealed drain for a seamless design. The shower walls are made up of 3 large panels in a custom made cultured marble and installed with matching corner shelves. These give a glossy clean look while providing lowing maintenance without the need for grouting between tiles. Bypass Fleurco shower doors were used as the clients wanted the ability to get in from either end. The clear frameless roll-top design allow the space to have an open feel and showcase the beauty of the walls behind. A stylish grab bar and a bright chrome adjustable slide rail with handheld shower complete the space.
For the vanity replacement, removal of the countertop and mirror that spanned fully above it required patching and sanding of the walls. The new 60” vanity was centered within the space featuring Carerra quartz countertops and double (his and hers) undermount sinks with Baril Sens lavatory faucets. Changing the old single sink into a double sink posed a challenge as we had to adjust the vent stack to create proper drainage. The wood vanity and matching framed-mirror were chosen in a dark navy finish to create contrast against the lighter colour flooring and walls and provide a focal point for the room.
Stylish LED vanity lights were installed above each sink to provide more light and draw attention up, now making the room feel much larger and spacious.
